In this course you will learn how to capture the beauty of a snow scene whether it's a bright sparkling sunny day, a quiet gray winter day or a glowing sunset warming up winter colors.

You will learn:

  • how to see more color in snow and winter landscape
  • how to capture different moods and light in a winter landscape
  • how to interpret "boring" grays to make an ordinary scene more interesting
  • how to improve a scene by creating a better composition
  • how to create the "winter wonderland" effect - the tree branches covered with thick snow
  • how to paint a winter scene with a creek (during the day and at the sunset)

You will learn how to use the Wet Underpainting technique to create more interesting rich color in your winter landscapes.

Painting Winter Creeks

Explore the beauty of the winter landscape with a winding creek. Learn how it helps to create the illusion of depth in the painting.

Learn how to capture the snow covered banks, the grasses and reeds bent under the heavy snow, the ice and rippled reflections.

Compare the different color palette you'll use to paint a sunlit creek scene and the creek at sunset. Learn how you can use the color to capture these different times of day.

Materials

UART sanded paper, 400 grit, neutral color, 12"x18" can be trimmed to a smaller size later

Mid tone gray sketching paper (for quick value studies)

Hard and Soft pastels (good range of basic colors from light to dark, particularly in greens, blues, browns, etc.)

Isopropyl Alcohol (you can use water instead)

Flat synthetic brush about 3/4"

Bristle brush for corrections

Toothbrush for foam spray effect

Artists' Masking Tape to attach the paper to the board

Foam core board

Glassine or Tracing paper to protect the finished project

Meet Lana

Hi! I'm Lana Ballot.

I'm excited to share with you my passion for the Color and the beautiful medium of pastels!

I am a professional artist and pastel painting instructor, living on Long Island, NY. I have been teaching classes and workshops throughout the United States and internationally.

I have been exhibiting and won awards in National as well as International Juried competitions, including the Pastel Society of America’s annual show Enduring Brilliance and the prestigious Pastel Journal’s Pastel 100 competition.

My work has been published in national and international art magazines, such as Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Issues of the Pratique des Arts, Artists & Illustrators.

I'm a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and The American Society of Marine Artists.
