Welcome

In this mini-course, while we are painting beautiful big dramatic skies, we'll learn:

  • how to create depth in the picture
  • how to create the feeling of atmosphere
  • how to make clouds look realistic, show their weight and volume
  • how to create the dramatic effects of the sun rays
  • how to paint the glow of the setting sun and its effect of the sky and clouds

And we'll start with quickly reviewing the Color basics, because Color is our main tool in achieving most of these goals.

Tips to making the most of these lessons:

  • Approach the projects in this course as exercises, don't try to paint masterpieces right away. We learn better when we feel free to experiment. We learn from mistakes, so don't be afraid to make them, but always analyze what went wrong and how you might avoid it next time.
  • Watch all the videos for each of the projects first, before you start working on your own version. This will make it easier for you to see the logic of the process, how the first steps, like underpainting or certain colors in the first layers, affect the final results.
  • Don't skip the value studies. They are important in understanding the structure of your future painting.
